Many
prominent Nigerians rose to celebrate with a public relations expert
and community leader, Chief Comfort Adepoju, last Sunday, when she was
installed as the President of the Lions Icon Club, Ogudu GRA, Lagos.
It was a carnival of sort at the Civic
Centre, Victoria Island, where Adepoju, who studied French at the
University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife) and has
worked for years at the NNPC, was honoured.
While top players in the private sector
present included Chief Olusola Dada, leaders of the Lions Club, such as
Lion Lawal Taofeek, Kola Oyekanmi and Patricia Udeme, supported Adepoju.
There was also star attraction when celebrated actress, Funke Akindele,
hit the podium with remarks that sparked laughter and applause.
According
to the actress, she is a personal friend of Adepoju. She recalled how
they met at a time she was experiencing a problem in her (Akindele)
private affairs. She said the hand of friendship and encouragement that
Adepoju extended to her was so timely and convincing that she had
remained close to her since then. Besides, Akindele promised that he
would support the new Ogudu Lions president in her projects during her
tenure.
In her acceptance speech, Adepoju
recalled that she joined the club in 2008. She noted that before them,
however, she had been treading the path of philanthropy, which, she
said, she inherited from her mother.
Saluting the founder of Lions Club, the
late Melvin Jones, she said it remained the biggest club at present,
“with 1.4 million dreamers in over 20 countries, touching lives.”
She thus urged all and sundry to join the club for the progress of the society.
Adepoju said, “Lions Club, Ogudu, was
formed in 2013, and various activities, such as health walk, visit to
schools, homes etc. were undertaken with a strong passion to continue to
do more and serve better. Our project during 2015/2016 Lions year is
simply ‘An eye clinic for the less-privileged children to be located in
the Ogudu GRA.”
Many people heeded her call for donation at the event.
