Eusebius McKaiser has challenged Allister Sparks to a public debate. (File)Johannesburg - Political analyst EusebiusMcKaiser was served a raw deal on Monday when he found a caterpillar in his Woolworths salad.
The
author and broadcaster snapped a picture of the extra ingredient in his
salad. The insect was white in colour and measured just a few
millimetres in length. He posted the image on social networking site Twitter.
"I was served a young caterpillar from @WOOLWORTHS_SA . Dear Woollies: I divorce you. I divorce you. I divorce you," McKaiser tweeted.
The retail store, which has in the last few months been plagued with embarrassing incidents apologised to McKaiser.
The retailer was quick to respond. "@Eusebius Oh No! Please don't! :( We're terribly sorry. Please DM us your details as we'd love to get in touch?," they tweeted to him.
Some of McKaiser's Twitter followers poked fun at the incident.
Referring to McKaiser's books, one of his followers said: "Woolies say, "Euby, we're sorry about the worm; but we hear you're a bookworm--how can we help?"
He joined in and joked about his find.
".@WOOLWORTHS_SA I'm still traumatised. And I've BEEN loyal. Hawu. You reward me with a caterpillar? Is it locally sourced at least?," he tweeted.
Last year, Woolworths, which is one of the top brands in South Africa, suffered great embarrassment when two different customers found frogs in their greens. One of the frogs was reportedly still alive when it was packaged.
The company has also faced criticism this year, with the BDS SA (Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions against Israel in South Africa) protesting outside Woolies shops, calling for the shop to stop stocking products from Israel.
In the past Woolworths has said it follows the South African government's rules on international trade and that more than 95% of its food is sourced locally. The retailer pointed out that the government of South Africa authorises trade with Israel.
