About 200 sheep died in a truck accident on the N1 outside of Vanderbijlpark. (SPCA)
Vanderbijlpark - About 200 sheep were killed when the double-decker
truck transporting them crashed on the N1 near Vanderbijlpark on
Wednesday morning."The accident scene was not very pleasant – live sheep on top and between dead sheep, with severely broken legs, jaws and other injuries,” the SPCA Vereeniging and Vanderbijlpark said in a statement on its Facebook page.
The truck overturned around 04:00 on Wednesday morning. The SPCA was called around 07:30. Most of the injured sheep had to be put down due to the severity of their injuries.
The owners were not happy with them killing the severely injured animals.
"To
make matters worse, the accident happened at 4:00 this morning and the
owners refuse to contact the SPCA because they are of the opinion that
the SPCA only walks in and destroys all their animals – yes, we will end
an animal’s suffering, especially when they have broken legs and jaws!"The SPCA said it would take action against the owners for leaving the animals to suffer. The driver of the truck was not injured and the surviving sheep were transported to a farm.
